🕷️ Did you make these?
Yes, yes I did.
🕷️ Where did you get this idea? Who inspired you?
Thanks for asking. Sarah from @AtypicalCuriosities on Instagram, as well as Jill from @threadhandedjill, also on Instagram. Both of them are incredible artists who inspired me to start this journey. I wanted to make one thing for my bathroom, and it turned into a whole small business. I will forever sing their praises, whether they know it or not.
🕷️ Can you make a tutorial video? / How did you make this?
I get asked this a lot, and I have thought about it more than I can begin to tell you. Honestly, I would not be doing what I do without artists like Sarah (@atypicalcuriosities) and my hella supportive spider twin Kenzie (@_wickeddesign_). I have too much respect for them to turn around and profit off something that is deeply tied to their work and influence. Could I throw together a five dollar tutorial? Yeah. But I cannot in good conscience do that to them.
Even though part of me would love to stick it to certain people in the community (you know who you are), I am past that. If the day ever comes where Sarah puts one out, or Kenzie and I decide to make one together, maybe I will. But for now, I would rather stay true to the people who inspired me, supported me and helped shape this weird little world.
That said, I HIGHLY recommend checking out ThreadHandedJill’s Etsy tutorial for webs. Holy hell, she is amazing. That is where I learned the basics for web embroidery. The rest is fishing string, bugle beads, and a whole lot of trial and error. 😉(I know i know, sorry).
🕷️ Do you take custom orders?
Yes. I offer fully customized spiders, scorpions, centipedes, webs, suncatchers, and framed pieces. Customs are open unless otherwise stated on my main page or socials. Prices vary depending on materials, size, and time involved. If you have another idea, lay it on me. If I can stick a needle through it, I will try it. I have done fabrics, bags, and shoes. I had a notebook suggested. Lets get weird.
🕷️ How long do customs take?
Typically 1-2 weeks, depending on complexity/size and my current queue. I will give you a timeline when we finalize the details. Usually, if I do not have much going on, turnaround time is pretty quick, within a few days. I work pretty quick. If I don't do asap, I'll forget so I move fast
🕷️ What materials do you use?
Each spider and web is handcrafted using a mix of beads, wire, embroidery thread, and curated embellishments like crystals, bones, charms, repurposed jewelry, and found objects. Every piece is one of a kind. I can also include or incorporate items that you have that you would like me to use. I have been asked about dirt and ashes, which is no problem. Ask the weird thing, no judgment. I will try anything at least once. Except tomatoes.
🕷️ Why are your prices what they are?
The way that I come up with my price is simple. All materials are at cost. I get my frames at Michaels, Ross, TJ Maxx. I also thrift a lot of frames, fabrics and jewelry, therefore, what I pay, you pay. So if I bought a Pottery Barn frame for two dollars, YOU bought a Pottery Barn frame for two dollars. Beads and fabric are cheap, thread is cheap. A few things I do not bother to charge for because I get confused, and it is not worth it for me to try and remember did I add the dollar for the fishing string or not ya know, so I just don't bother. Idc enough. I charge $20/hour, and then whatever that figure is, I multiply by 1.5 for profit.
In the future, this might change, but for now it works for me. I feel it keeps my prices fair, I do not feel bad charging it, and it makes my art feel more accessible. It also helps me work within budgets, since most of the price comes from time. Smaller work 🟰 smaller price. Bigger work 🟰 bigger price.
🕷️ Do you ship internationally?
At this time, I only ship within the United States. Sorry, overseas friends.
🕷️ Are your pieces fragile?
I have two young kids. I am also a whole mess. It has been dropped and shaken at least once. They are sturdy enough to display or hang, but they are still art, not frisbees. I mean, once it is yours, you do what you want with it I guess. Who am I to stop you? If you want to keep it nice though, please handle with care. Do not throw it.
🕷️ Can I request a restock of something I saw here or on Instagram?
Once a piece sells, it is usually gone for good (unless possessed). But I am always happy to recreate something to the best of my ability. Just shoot me a message if something caught your eye, and we will go from there.
🕷️ Do you offer wholesale or consignment?
Maybe. I am still waiting for Betsy Johnson to get back to me on a purse collab, so until that happens, I am down to sell in other places.
🕷️ Do you want to collab with me?
Uh, maybe. If your thing has a way of being a part of my thing or vice versa, then yes, lets try it. Shoot me an email or DM on Instagram (fastest bet), and we will see.
🕷️ Do you want to trade?
Sometimes. I am open to trades for original oddity style pieces. Think bones, skulls, taxidermy or other unusual handmade art. I am not currently looking to trade for prints or mass produced items, but feel free to shoot your shot if you think we would vibe. I'm not as mean as I look, it's just my face.
🕷️ Can I request a specific theme or color combo?
Absolutely! It's literally where I thrive. Just message me with your ideas. I will let you know what is possible based on materials I have at the moment, though I can get damn near anything, because internets. You can customize your piece down to the individual leg joint colors if you want.
🕷️ What payments do you accept?
Whatever is offered here on Big Cartel. I also have PayPal and Venmo goods and services. For some reason, they are being weird with me connecting it here so if you are interested in paying via PayPal or Venmo, please reach out.
🕷️ Do you offer returns or refunds?
Because everything is handmade and often one of a kind, all sales are final. If something arrives damaged, message me within three days and we will figure it out. (No, I told you not to throw it.)
